Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry serves a population of around 200,000 for general hospital services and around 400,000 for specialist services such as trauma, orthopaedics and ophthalmology.

The hospital’s newly completed, award winning £33m development of the South Wing was marked by a visit from Her Majesty The Queen accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.

220 Leaderflush Shapland Designer range doorsets were specified for the project incorporating EnduraCor. EnduraCor is an engineered performance core whose durability and stability make it especially suitable for healthcare applications. In a recent independent test, EnduraCor was shown to be one hundred times more durable than multi-layered chipboard - this highly cost-effective solution could significantly reduce ‘whole life’ repair and maintenance costs.

The doorsets were faced in Steamed Beech crown cut veneer and provide up to 60 minutes fire resistance. Lead lined doorsets from the Extended Performance range were also specified to provide X-ray protection in accordance with the National Radiological Protection Board’s guidance.

Furthermore the doorsets help to control the spread of infection through the use of Hygienilac, Leaderflush Shapland’s highly effective anti-microbial additive, which kills most bacteria including C.diff, MRSA, Salmonella and E.coli, and is added as standard to the wood lacquer on all Leaderflush Shapland veneered doorsets – ideal in healthcare environments where hygiene is a major concern.
